Book of the Moment - Crucial Conversations
Crucial Conversations: Tools for talking when stakes are high. By Kerry Patterson, Joseph Grenny, Ron McMillan, Al Switzler
From the time the authors define "crucial conversations" in the first chapter as "discussion between two or more people where the stakes are high, opinions vary and emotions run strong" the reader is hooked. After all, it is human nature to back away from discussions we fear will hurt us or make things worse - we are masters at avoiding these tough conversations. And we could probably all do with some help in these situations.
This is a well-structured book that offers sound self help tips and strategies that can eliminate the stress that often comes with confronting tough issues. It includes many anecdotal examples that encourage the reader to learn how to:
- Prepare for high-stakes situations
- Transform anger and hurt feelings into powerful dialogue
- Make it safe to talk about almost anything
- Be persuasive, not abusive
The book offers illuminating diagrams that support and reinforce the text. It is presented with humour, is practical and realistic. Of particular interest to many readers will be the self tests - especially the communicating under stress test on pages 56 - 62.
In a world that is increasingly relying on technology to communicate, this book is a compelling reminder of the need to build relationships through meaningful communication.
