The Need
Genesis Energy owns and operates 1,640MW of electricity generation, including New Zealand’s largest thermal power station at Huntly, hydro stations at Tongariro and Lake Waikaremoana, and the Hau Nui Wind Farm in the Wairarapa. Genesis Energy is also New Zealand’s largest retailer of energy, with more than 700,000 gas and electricity customers throughout the country.
Nexus Partners was engaged to work with the Tongariro Maintenance team who were often operating as individuals – and this posed a significant challenge to developing productive team member relationships and in building a robust company-wide culture.
The Solution
19 maintenance workers spent one and a half days taking part in a Nexus Partners Team Development Workshop, an intensive blend of outdoor team initiative challenges and communication skills training. Significant improvements to their approach and attitude towards each other were achieved, and in this new environment the team were able to develop initiatives to address specific workplace issues. Some of the practical outcomes include more efficient vehicle use, and less work delays as a result (simply achieved through greater co-operation). The daily team meetings are more constructive and positive – and rather than taking 40-60 minutes, they are now completed in 20 minutes. This alone has resulted in a productivity saving for Genesis Energy of several tens of thousands of dollars per annum.
